Gaining height
Posted by Shelagh on Sunday 13th July 2008
I think I have had bad posture since I was a teenager and eventually went to pilates having suffered a sore neck and shoulder for ages. After doing Lesley's class for approximately 2 years I went for my 3 yearly check at the doctors and discovered much to my, and the nurse's, amazement that my eight had gone up by almost 2 centimetres! After much discussion she was convinced it was the pilates and the great improvement in my posture! Well worth continuing!

Attending Lesley's class has really helped me gain my core strength and confidence back. 6 months after having my first child, I suffered a stroke. I used to teach a variety of fitness classes and loved the buzz that this gave me and my participants- it is my passion. Pilates wasn't an area that I was familiar with but knew myself that if I ever wanted to teach again I had to rehabilitate from the inside and work my way out. The stroke affected my lower back and abdominal muscles quite badly and it was important to me to be patient and make sure that this area was strengthened correctly. With Lesley's expertise and patience I am now very much looking forward to a return into the fitness world in 2008. I have now very much fallen in love with Pilates. A heartfelt thank you.

I wasn't sure Pilates would be for me â being reasonably fit, a fan of step aerobics, power walking and the adrenaline high that goes with them. However, my body wasnât as toned as I wanted it to be. Lots of lithe, supple dancers are big advocates of Pilates so I decided to give it a go. I used to think that my posture was fairly good before joining Lesley's class but I soon realised that I carried my shoulders up round my ears and poked my pelvis forward, as if supporting a baby, when standing I used to get lower back pain but suffer no more.
My driving position is significantly improved too â no more chin poking! The movements may seem tame in the beginning but soon progress to a really good tough workout. We work muscle groups I'd taken for granted before. Itâs probably the best workout for the abdominals that Iâve ever done as youâre working them all the time. I find myself pulling in my stomach muscles. (20% of course!) most of the time throughout the day. Lesley has a relaxed, approachable style of teaching with good humour thrown in so that the exercises are not intimidating as in some yoga classes I've attended
Use it or lose it!

I have been doing Lesley's Pilates for 2 years, going regularly to a weekly class. I try to practice the routine at home whenever I get time, simply because the benefits I find from doing the exercises are really amazing. I am so much better and I am able to relax and sleep more easily.
I will continue with the class as long as I am able and hopefully progress with the exercises as they advance. I would also encourage others to take up Lesley's Pilates, as they will experience the benefits after only a short time.

Very helpful for keeping me generally flexible and helping me stand up straightened and hold everything in!

I look forward to Lesleyâs Pilates class every week. She is a fun and enthusiastic teacher and gives you the confidence to push yourself a little further. When I started her class I thought I would never be able to do a shoulder bridge or a plank, but taking it step by step and building up I am now able to do these "moves".
Pilates has improved my posture and muscle tone, especially in the tummy area and when I leave class I feel very relaxed and soporific. It has been very beneficial for my depression enabling me to unwind and relax. I would highly recommend Pilates with Lesley and hate if I have to miss it. Pilates also improves your suppleness and sex life!!

Definitely arrests my back pain â after a four week break I really noticed the difference on my return after just one session. My pelvic floor muscles have tightened assisting my posture and bladder problem.

From the very first class with Lesley when we all came out saying how relaxed we felt, I can honestly say I have found these classes very beneficial. Lesley explains everything so well, what we have to do and also why we are doing it. She creates a relaxed atmosphere so that the classes are enjoyable as well as physically challenging in a gentle way.
The fact that gradually, over time Pilates helps to build up muscle strength and is geared to all areas of the body, it seems to me that from a general health point of view everyone would benefit from these classes. Lesley is helping people develop good posture and encouraging each of us to think about our bodies and the best way to maintain strength and flexibility, which will help us, all whatever age or fitness level.
The classes combine the exercises with a sense of relaxation, which is also a very worthwhile skill in itself
